A tan is the skin’s natural way of protecting itself from the sun. When ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight reach the skin, special cells called melanocytes start making a pigment called melanin. This pigment darkens the skin and helps protect the deeper layers from UV damage. This process is the body’s defense system, showing up as a tan on healthy skin.

What is a “Scar Tan”?

The idea of a “scar tan” is actually a misconception. Scars do not change color in the same way healthy skin does. Because scars do not have the pigment-producing cells that make melanin, they cannot truly tan. What sometimes looks like a scar “tanning” is actually the surrounding healthy skin getting darker, which can make the scar appear more noticeable.

The main reason is the structure of scar tissue. When the body repairs a wound, it builds a patch made mostly of dense collagen fibers. This repair tissue works like a quick fix to close and protect the wound. However, scar tissue contains very few or no melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin. Without melanocytes, scars cannot make melanin, and this is why they do not tan like the rest of the skin.

Will Tanning Help Scars?

Tanning does not help a scar fade or disappear. Instead, it makes scars easier to see. Many people believe tanning can make scars blend into the skin, but this is a myth. In reality, tanning highlights the scar and can even make it look worse.

The Reality

When the skin is exposed to the sun, the healthy skin around the scar changes color because of tanning. Scar tissue, however, does not tan in the same way. Does a Spray Tan Cover Scars?

Spray tans or self-tanning products can provide a short-term option to hide scars. By giving the skin a more even tone, they can help scars blend in better with the surrounding skin. However, the effect does not last long because the color fades as the outer skin naturally sheds.

Limitations

While spray tans can help camouflage scars, they do not cover them completely. Scars that are raised, sunken, or uneven in texture may still be noticeable. In addition, the tanning dye may absorb differently on scar tissue compared to normal skin, which can make the edges of the scar stand out rather than blend in.

A scar goes through a maturation phase that usually lasts between 6 to 18 months. During this time, the scar is still developing and is very sensitive.
