This condition is frequently associated with systemic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), rheumatoid arthritis, or hematologic disorders.

How Does the Wound Happen?

The ulcers form due to an abnormal immune response, where neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) mistakenly attack healthy skin tissue. This immune dysfunction leads to severe inflammation and tissue breakdown. Minor trauma, such as a bump or injection, can sometimes trigger the formation of new ulcers—a reaction known as pathergy.

What Happens If Not Treated?

  • Ulcer enlargement and tissue destruction: Without intervention, ulcers can rapidly grow in size and depth, often with undermined edges and extensive skin loss.
  • Severe pain and disability: The lesions are extremely painful, and as they worsen, they can interfere with movement or daily activities.
