What is a Chemical Burn?
A chemical burn is a type of skin injury caused by contact with a corrosive or irritating substance, such as a strong acid or alkali. These burns can damage not just the surface of the skin (epidermis), but also deeper layers, depending on the strength and duration of exposure to the chemical. Unlike thermal burns, which are caused by heat, chemical burns occur when the skin is exposed to harmful substances that trigger a destructive reaction.
Chemical burns may appear red, blistered, or blackened, and symptoms can include pain, swelling, or even numbness. In some cases, the damage may not be immediately visible, especially if the chemical continues to react with the skin after contact.
Chemical burns usually occur when the skin (or eyes) comes into direct contact with harmful chemicals. Common causes include:
- Industrial accidents: Workers in manufacturing, construction, or laboratories may be exposed to corrosive chemicals without proper protective gear.
- Household cleaning products: Strong cleaning agents like bleach, ammonia, drain cleaners, or oven cleaners can cause burns if they come in contact with the skin.
- Cosmetic or aesthetic treatments: Improper use of chemical peels or skin-lightening products may lead to mild to moderate chemical burns, especially if left on the skin too long or used on sensitive areas.
- Accidental spills or splashes: Splashes from acids (like hydrochloric or sulfuric acid) or alkaline substances (like sodium hydroxide) during handling or storage can burn the skin.
The severity of the burn depends on the type of chemical, the concentration, the duration of exposure, and the area affected.
What Happens If Not Treated?
- Ongoing Tissue Damage: Some chemicals continue to react with skin tissue even after contact ends. Without immediate rinsing or neutralization, the chemical can penetrate deeper layers and worsen the burn.
- Infection Risk: Damaged or broken skin from a chemical burn can be an entry point for bacteria, especially if the area is not cleaned or covered properly. Infected chemical burns may show redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain.
- Scarring and Discoloration: Moderate to severe chemical burns can lead to permanent scarring, dark patches, or uneven skin tone if not treated early and properly. This is especially common with burns on the face or hands.
- Loss of Function or Sensation: If the burn penetrates deep enough, it may damage nerves or underlying tissues, which can lead to long-term loss of sensation or mobility in the affected area.
- Delayed Healing: Chemical burns left untreated may take much longer to heal. Lack of moisture, irritation, or continued exposure to harmful substances can slow down skin recovery.
- Systemic Toxic Effects (in severe cases): Some chemicals may enter the bloodstream through the skin, potentially causing effects beyond the burn site. This is more common in large burns or with highly toxic substances.
