What is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peel is a common aesthetic treatment that uses a chemical solution to intentionally remove the outer layers of the skin. The goal is to trigger the skin’s natural healing process and encourage the growth of new, smoother, and brighter skin.
Even when performed correctly, the procedure causes controlled skin damage — this is how it works. The outer layers of skin peel off, making way for fresh, regenerated skin underneath. However, if the peel is too strong or used improperly, it may result in more severe skin wounds.

- Acne and acne scars
- Uneven skin tone and pigmentation
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun-damaged skin
- Rough or dull skin texture
- Age spots and melasma
Types of Chemical Peels:
- Superficial Peels: Light exfoliation using mild acids (like alpha-hydroxy acid). Minimal downtime, but may cause mild redness and dryness.
- Medium Peels: Penetrate deeper layers, often using trichloroacetic acid (TCA). It can cause redness, swelling, and peeling for several days.
- Deep Peels: Reach the lower dermal layers, typically using phenol. These require longer recovery and carry more risk of scarring or pigmentation changes.
How the Wound Happens:
Chemical peels work by intentionally damaging the skin, which is part of the treatment process. The stronger the peel, the deeper the skin injury.
However, when performed incorrectly, such as overusing the product, using the wrong type for the skin, or not following aftercare, the treatment can lead to chemical burns, open wounds, excessive peeling, and blisters.
What will happen if not interrupt:
If the skin damage from a chemical peel isn’t treated properly:
- The area may become infected, especially if blisters or open wounds are exposed to bacteria.
- Hyperpigmentation or dark spots may develop as the skin heals unevenly.
- The wound can result in scarring or long-term skin discoloration.
- The healing process may be slow and uncomfortable, leading to prolonged redness, itching, or skin sensitivity.
