What is an Equipment Friction Injury?
Equipment friction injuries are skin damages caused by repeated rubbing or pressure between the skin and an object or surface—commonly from personal items, clothing, or work-related equipment. These injuries are often underestimated but can be painful and lead to complications if not managed early. They typically occur in areas where the skin is in frequent contact with hard or tight materials, leading to redness, irritation, blisters, or even open wounds over time.
How Does the Wound Happen?
Friction injuries occur when the skin experiences constant rubbing or pressure that weakens or breaks the outer layer (epidermis). This type of injury is common during daily activities or work that involves movement, repetitive tasks, or wearing equipment for long periods. Typical causes include:
- Wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, causing friction around toes, heels, or ankles
- Repeated rubbing from shoulder straps, belts, or tight clothing
- Prolonged use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks, helmets, goggles, or gloves
- Sports gear like knee pads, helmets, or armbands causing pressure during movement
- Office equipment (e.g., wrist support or chair edges) constantly pressing against the skin
- Using mobility aids like crutches, wheelchairs, or braces that apply pressure on the same skin areas daily
Friction injuries can appear as red, inflamed skin at first, then develop into blisters, abrasions, or ulcers if the rubbing continues.
What Happens If Not Treated?
If friction injuries are left untreated or continue to be exposed to the same stress, they can quickly worsen. Some common consequences include:
- Skin Breakdown: Continued friction can damage deeper skin layers, leading to open wounds or sores.
- Blister Formation: Repetitive rubbing often leads to fluid-filled blisters that can burst, leaving raw skin exposed.
- Infection Risk: Open or irritated areas are vulnerable to bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.
- Inflammation and Swelling: Ongoing friction can trigger inflammation, pain, and discomfort in the affected area.
- Delayed Healing: Constant exposure to the same cause prevents the skin from recovering, leading to slow or incomplete healing.
- Scarring: In more severe or repeated cases, friction wounds may heal with discoloration or permanent scarring.
- Restricted Movement: Pain or discomfort from injured skin can limit daily activities, especially if the area is under pressure during walking, sitting, or working.
