What are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are injectable treatments (like Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin) used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily relax muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines. They work by blocking nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions, leading to smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
When performed correctly, these treatments are generally safe and cause only minor side effects. However, because they involve needles and work by affecting the nervous system, they may still result in localized skin damage or complications, even when done professionally.
Conditions Treated:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines (glabellar lines)
- Crow’s feet (around the eyes)
- Bunny lines (nose wrinkles)
- Neck bands
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Jaw slimming or muscle-related facial shaping
How the Wound Happens:
Although neuromodulator injections are minimally invasive, they still involve skin puncture with fine needles.
This can cause:
- Bruising at the injection site (from broken blood vessels)
- Swelling, redness, or tenderness
- In rare cases, poor technique can lead to bleeding under the skin or localized infections
If the product is injected incorrectly or into the wrong muscle, it can lead to muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, uneven facial expression, or nerve irritation, which, although not open wounds, are considered soft tissue complications.
What Happens If Not Treated:
If complications or skin damage from neuromodulator injections are not properly managed:
- Bruising or swelling may worsen or last longer
- Skin infection may develop, especially if bacteria enter through the injection site
- Persistent asymmetry or facial drooping can affect appearance and self-confidence
- In severe cases, the patient may need medical attention to correct adverse nerve or muscle reactions
