What is Thermal Injury (Heat & Cold)?
Thermal injuries are skin damage caused by exposure to extreme temperatures, either high heat or intense cold. These injuries can vary in severity, ranging from mild redness and discomfort to deep burns or frostbite that may harm muscles, nerves, and blood vessels beneath the skin.
- Heat injuries occur due to direct contact with hot objects, scalding liquids, open flames, or intense sunlight.
- Cold injuries are caused by exposure to freezing temperatures, often resulting in frostbite or chilblains, which damage skin cells and tissue.
How Does the Wound Happen?
Thermal injuries commonly happen during routine activities or environmental exposure. Here are some typical causes:
Heat-Related Injuries:
- Accidental contact with hot kitchenware, such as ovens, stovetops, or metal cookware
- Spilling hot liquids like boiling water, soup, or oil on the skin
- Steam burns while cooking or using appliances
- Extended exposure to direct sunlight, especially without sunscreen (sunburn)
- Use of heating pads or hot water bottles for too long on one area of the skin
Cold-Related Injuries:
- Being outside in freezing temperatures without protective clothing
- Prolonged skin contact with ice packs, snow, or cold metal surfaces
- Working in cold environments like refrigerated storage without proper insulation
- Wearing wet clothing in cold weather for an extended period
In both cases, the skin’s cells are damaged, either through burning or freezing, causing inflammation, pain, and in more severe cases, loss of sensation or tissue death.
What Happens If Not Treated?
If thermal injuries are ignored or improperly treated, they may lead to serious skin and health problems. Some of the complications include:
- Infection: Damaged skin loses its protective barrier, making it easier for bacteria to enter and cause infections.
- Blistering and Skin Breakdown: Untreated burns or frostbite can worsen, leading to blisters, open wounds, and tissue damage.
- Delayed Healing: Without proper care, wounds take longer to heal and may increase the risk of chronic skin problems.
- Scarring: Severe burns or frostbite may lead to permanent scarring or pigmentation changes.
- Loss of Sensation: In cold-related injuries, prolonged exposure can damage nerves, causing numbness or tingling that may become permanent.
- Tissue Death (Necrosis): In extreme cases, deep burns or frostbite can kill skin and underlying tissue, sometimes requiring surgical removal or skin grafts.
- Pain and Discomfort: Ongoing irritation, swelling, or tightness around the injured area can affect quality of life and movement.
