What is a Blister?

A blister is a small, fluid-filled bubble that forms on the outer layer of the skin, usually as a natural defense response to friction, heat, or irritation. The fluid inside (usually clear plasma) cushions the damaged tissue underneath and protects it from further harm as the skin heals. Blisters can vary in size and may appear on the feet, hands, or any area exposed to repetitive pressure or heat.

How Does the Wound Happen?

Blisters are commonly caused by friction, heat, or minor burns. Here are the most typical causes:

Friction Blisters:

  • Wearing new or ill-fitting shoes that rub against the skin
  • Walking or running long distances without proper socks or foot protection
  • Using tools, sports equipment, or gloves that cause repeated rubbing on the hands
  • Wearing tight or unbreathable clothing during physical activity

Heat Blisters:

  • Mild burns from hot surfaces, steam, or sunburn
  • Repeated contact with hot objects or prolonged exposure to high heat
  • Scalds from hot liquids

When the outer layer of the skin is damaged by rubbing or heat, the body responds by creating a pocket of fluid to protect the tissue and promote healing.

What Happens If Not Treated?

If blisters are not properly managed, especially if they rupture or become irritated, several issues may arise:

  • Infection: Open or burst blisters expose raw skin, increasing the risk of bacterial infection.
  • Increased Pain: Continued friction or pressure on an untreated blister can make it more painful and worsen the wound.
  • Delayed Healing: Without protection or care, the skin underneath the blister takes longer to heal.
  • Scarring or Skin Discoloration: Improper handling, like forcefully popping a blister, may lead to scars or pigment changes.
  • Fluid Re-accumulation: If the cause of friction continues, new blisters may form even after one heals.
  • Spread of Infection: In some cases, an infected blister can cause redness, swelling, or pus, and in rare cases, the infection can spread deeper into the tissue.
