Microneedling

Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine, short needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production, two proteins essential for smooth, firm, and youthful-looking skin.

Even when done correctly, microneedling deliberately damages the skin on a micro level. This controlled wounding is necessary for the skin to regenerate and improve in texture and tone.

Conditions Treated:

  • Acne scars and enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Dull or aging skin
  • Mild pigmentation issues

Types of Microneedling:

  • Traditional Microneedling (Manual or Pen-Based): Uses a roller or device with tiny needles to create uniform punctures.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling: Combines microneedling with heat to boost collagen production deeper in the skin.
  • Microneedling with Serums: Applies active ingredients (like hyaluronic acid or vitamins) during treatment for better absorption.

How the Wound Happens:

During microneedling, tiny puncture wounds are made across the skin surface. While these are not deep cuts, they are still injuries that the skin must heal. If the needles are too long, applied with too much pressure, or used on sensitive or infected skin, the wounds can become deeper or more severe.

If the procedure is performed incorrectly or in unclean conditions, the tiny wounds can lead to:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Bleeding or scabbing
  • Localized skin irritation
  • Entry points for infection

What Happens If Not Treated:

If the skin isn’t properly cared for after microneedling:

  • The open micro-wounds may get infected, especially if touched or exposed to dirt and bacteria.
  • Poor healing may result in scarring, skin flaking, or prolonged inflammation.
  • The treated skin can become discolored (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation), especially without sun protection.
  • The risk of breakouts or sensitivity increases, particularly for acne-prone or reactive skin.
