Cryolipolysis

What is Cryolipolysis?

Cryolipolysis, often branded as CoolSculpting, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure used to reduce localized fat deposits. It works by applying intense cold to fat cells under the skin, causing them to freeze and gradually break down. The body then naturally eliminates the dead fat cells over time.

While it’s considered safe and non-surgical, the process still deliberately damages tissue, especially fat cells. In some cases, nearby skin and nerve tissue may also be affected, which can lead to skin injuries or complications.

Conditions Treated:

  • Stubborn fat bulges in areas like the abdomen, thighs, flanks, upper arms, and under the chin
  • Body contouring and reshaping
  • Fat reduction without surgery or downtime

Areas Commonly Treated:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • Flanks (sides of the waist)
  • Upper arms
  • Back (bra fat area)
  • Under the buttocks (“banana roll”)
  • Submental area (double chin)

How the Wound Happens:

Cryolipolysis works by exposing fat cells to extreme cold, which causes them to crystallize and die. Although it doesn’t break the skin, this controlled damage can sometimes affect surrounding tissues, especially if the cooling is uneven, prolonged, or improperly administered.

Common skin effects include:

  • Redness, bruising, and swelling
  • Skin numbness or tingling due to nerve irritation
  • In rare cases, frostbite-like injuries, blisters, or skin ulceration

What Happens If Not Treated:

If complications or skin injuries from cryolipolysis are not properly addressed:

  • Blisters may worsen into open sores, risking infection
  • Prolonged nerve damage may cause chronic pain or numbness
  • Skin pigmentation changes (darkening or lightening) may become long-lasting
  • Scarring may develop in severe or neglected cases
  • Rarely, untreated tissue injury can lead to paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) — a condition where fat cells increase in size instead of breaking down
