Scar Revision

What is Scar Revision?

Scar revision is a surgical procedure performed to improve the appearance of a scar or restore function to an area of the skin that has been restricted by scar tissue. It does not remove the scar entirely but makes it less noticeable by changing its size, color, texture, or location. Scar revision is often done for cosmetic reasons or to correct scars that have healed poorly after previous injuries or surgeries.

How does the wound happen?

During scar revision, the surgeon reopens the scarred area and carefully removes or rearranges the scar tissue. This creates a new surgical wound that is then closed using advanced techniques such as layered sutures or skin grafts to promote better healing. Although it’s a controlled process, it still results in a wound that needs proper care during recovery.

What Happens If Not Treated Properly?

  • Infection: Like all surgical wounds, there’s a risk of infection if the area is not kept clean and protected. Infection can worsen the scar or delay healing.
  • Poor Healing or Scar Recurrence: Without proper aftercare, the new wound may heal poorly, creating another raised, wide, or discolored scar, sometimes worse than the original.
  • Wound Separation: The revised area may reopen if under stress, especially in areas with a lot of movement or tension.
  • Skin Irritation or Pain: Improper care or using the wrong products can lead to irritation, prolonged discomfort, or delayed healing.
  • Unwanted Results: Without correct wound management, the aesthetic outcome may not meet expectations, requiring additional treatment.
